Facial microcurrent: a simple guide for beginners

Microcurrent devices promise a “refreshed” look for your face. But how do they work, and how do you use them properly? Here's a clear guide to get started with confidence.

What is microcurrent?

It's a series of very mild electrical pulses sent by the head of the device when it touches the skin. They're designed to be gentle: most of the time you'll only feel a slight tingle, or nothing at all. In salons, it's often called a “facial workout”.

What results can you expect?

  • A toned, refreshed feeling in your face.
  • A visible “lifted” effect right after the session, especially along the jawline.
  • A pleasant massage that fits easily into your evening routine.

The effects are temporary and vary from skin to skin: consistency is what makes the difference. Microcurrent does not replace a medical procedure or a professional treatment.

The right technique, step by step

  1. Cleanse your skin: it should be clean and makeup-free.
  2. Apply a generous layer of serum or gel, ideally water-based. Microcurrent works better on damp skin: that's secret #1.
  3. Turn on microcurrent mode and place the head of the device flat against your skin.
  4. Glide slowly upward: from the chin to the ear, from the corner of the mouth to the cheekbone, then from the brows to the temples. Always from the center outward, and from bottom to top.
  5. Pause for 2 to 3 seconds at the end of each stroke, then repeat 3 to 5 times per area.

How often?

Plan on 5 minutes a day, or at least 4 to 5 times a week. After 4 consistent weeks, you'll have a good idea of the results on your skin.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using the device on dry skin: you won't feel anything and the effect will be weaker.
  • Pressing too hard: firm contact is enough, no need to force it.
  • Going over the eyelids or too close to the eyes.

Important precautions

  • Do not use if you have a pacemaker, an electronic implant or a heart condition.
  • Do not use during pregnancy.
  • Avoid broken, irritated or recently treated areas (peels, injections, laser): ask your practitioner for advice.
  • If you have epilepsy or any doubt, ask your doctor for advice.

Frequently asked questions

Does it hurt?

No. At most, you'll feel a slight tingle. If it's uncomfortable, add more serum: your skin should be nicely damp.

Can I use it with my hyaluronic acid serum?

Yes, it's actually ideal: a water-based serum helps the device glide smoothly.

I have dental implants or thread lifts: can I use it?

If in doubt, ask your dentist or doctor before use.
